Review of IDL

9 Distributed Support

IDL supports Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) on Unix platforms only. RPCs allow IDL to be run as a server and another application on the same or a remote machine to act as a client. Several C interface functions are provided. Since the review machine was running Windows 95 these features could not be tested.

IDL can also be used as a graphics engine to generate images on the fly, which are then viewed over the WWW. IDL-WWW, a collection of sample perl scripts and HTML demonstrating this, has been developed by Jason Mathews at the National Space Science Data Center, USA and is available from: http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/idl/idl_web.html
