Eurographics UK 1998 Conference

25 - 27 March 1998
University of Leeds, UK

This year's Eurographics UK conference will highlight the following themes:

There will be a mix of tutorials, invited speakers, refereed papers and shorter papers introducing new work... and the chance to meet up with your graphics colleagues in the UK. The social stream of the conference includes a visit to Tetley's Brewery Wharf - and the chance to take part in a re-enactment of pub life through the ages!

Also, why not combine the conference with a visit to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales for a short Easter break?

Full details of the conference programme, and how to register for the conference, are at:

The Mathematics of Surfaces

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications Eighth IMA Conference
31 August - 2 September 1998
University of Birmingham

Call for Papers

The eighth IMA Conference on The Mathematics of Surfaces will take place at the University of Birmingham, UK, on 31 August - 2 September 1998. Computer-based methods for the construction, representation, and manipulation of complicated surfaces have led to a wide interest in, and need for, surface mathematics. Many applications now require the use of surface descriptions, especially in such fields as computer aided design and machining, and computer vision and inspection of manufactured parts. The description of surfaces is also of interest in geographic information systems and multimedia, and many other areas of science and medicine. This diversity and the wide range of applicability of the subject have already enabled the IMA to hold seven very successful conferences on the mathematics of surfaces. The eighth such conference has now been scheduled. Several international authorities will be presenting invited papers, and contributed papers are now called for. These will be refereed by an international programme committee.

Three types of papers are sought:

Full papers will be considered and should be sent to Dr R J Cripps, Geometric Modelling Group, School of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering, The University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT, U.K., by 1 March 1998. Papers may also be electronically mailed to r.cripps@bham.ac.uk

Confirmed invited speakers include:

P Besl (Silicon Graphics), R Farouki (University of Michigan), H Hagen (University of Kaiserlauten), J Hoschek (Technische Hochschule Darmstadt), G Lukacs (Hungarian Academy of Sciences), T Lyche (University of Oslo), D Manocha (University of North Carolina), and H-P Seidel (University of Erlangen).

Authors will be notified of acceptance by 1 May 1998, and revised papers will be due on 1 June 1998.

"Digital Convergence - the Future of Internet and World Wide Web"

The British Computer Society Computer Graphics & Displays Group will hold an international two day meeting on this theme to take place in the UK, 20 - 23 April 1998.

There is a lot of current interest in the convergence of computing, telecommunications, television and broadcasting. Media organisations can put their information on network servers and periodically update it. Users download what they are interested in. Tools and techniques for accessing, interacting with, and displaying media information are on the increase. Strategies for overcoming bandwidth limitations are needed.

Collaborative Virtual Environments 1998 (CVE'98)

17 - 19 June 1998
Manchester, UK

CVE'98, the second international conference on Collaborative Virtual Environments

A Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVE) is one that actively supports human-human communication in addition to human-machine communication and which uses a Virtual Environment (including textually based environments such as MUDs/MOOs) as the user interface. This is an exciting field with much potential for inter-disciplinary collaboration particularly in the fields of computer science, psychology, sociology, architecture & urban planning, cultural & media studies, and Artificial Intelligence.

CVE'98 is aimed towards the use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology and applications which support collaboration between users rather than on VR technology itself. CVE'98's goal is to present the current state-of-the-art in Collaborative Virtual Environments and foster inter-disciplinary links between researchers in this field.

This year CVE'98 will be held in conjunction with the workshop "System Aspects of Sharing a Virtual Reality" which will take place on the 17 June '98.

The main topics of the workshop include:
