Report Summary

This report is based on work carried out to investigate the use of desktop videoconferencing products to support Helpdesk/Advisory activities in a Computing Service environment. The report provides background information on products available on Unix systems and details the use of the SUN Showme suite of videoconferencing software. Particular mention is made of the experienced gained in using the facilities to support those with hearing difficulties.

Although the report is based mainly on experience of videoconferencing over a Local Area Network, it should also have relevance to those wishing to exploit desktop technology over Wide Area Networks.

It is hoped that the report will be useful to those wishing to exploit this new technology and will provide some foresight into the possible benefits, and to the pitfalls, which may be encountered.
