Summary

Virtual Reality (VR) is emerging as a very powerful educational tool that has the potential to provide higher education establishments with a powerful and effective educational environment. The major advantage of a VR system is the way it will allow students to interact with educational orientated simulations.

In a fast changing field such as VR it is important to fully understand the implications of the technology and in particular where and how it should be implemented in an educational curriculum. To address these issues it has been necessary to cast a wider net over the field rather than just deal with the hardware aspects of virtual reality. This perspective will provide a greater and realistic insight into the opportunities a VR based educational environment will provide.
