Appendix 1 : Package Classes

The packages are broken down into the following functional areas:

• Mainly Text
• Mixed Text & Graphics
• Business Graphics
• Simple Diagrams
• Scientific Graphs
•  Statistical Graphics

• 3 ticks -- excellent for the job
• 2 ticks -- good, but check the exact facilides you require
• 1 tick -- does some
• X ---- not in the package remit, but, with effort, might be made to do it
• XXX ---- don't even think about it

Appendix 1 inevitably gives a very broad categorisation, but one which - whilst somewhat subjective - should nonetheless allow the user quickly to assess the relative merits of the various packages, and, in particular, to concentrate selection on functionality divorced from computing platform. Once a package has been selected from Appendix 1, it can be looked at in more detail in Appendix 2 before a final decision is taken.

If you want to start from having a specific platform - such as a PC or Mac - you may be denying yourself the full range of graphicalfacilities. We are keen thatyoufind the right solution to your problem, rather than bending your problem to fit a particular solution!
