Introduction to the Workbook

This workbook is designed to teach you the basic skills required to use the Interactive program. It should take no longer than an hour to complete. You will be taught how to read data from a file, display a meaningful picture with suitable annotation, ho w to get a printed version of your pictures as well as how to obtain on-line help. It assumes that you know how to logon to your computer and run the program using a mouse or other pointing device for input.

As far as possible each page of the workbook is designed to be a simple exercise. At the top of each page is a simple description of the task you are about to perform. The picture is what you should see during the task. Below the picture is a set of instr uctions which you should follow in order to achieve the correct result. You should also work from the beginning of the workbook to the end. If you wish to go into the program in more depth, there is an accompanying "Solutions" booklet to which you should refer.

The instructions are all in the same format and refer to panels and menu items. To select a menu item you should place the pointer over the item and press the left mouse button. For more information on the actions of the other buttons, see the next page.

The naming of the panels is as follows:

You should interpret the instructions as follows:

Panel Selection Comments
Top HARDCOPY	This item gives access to the
				printing menus
Upper DEVICE This item gives you a list of
				supported devices
Popup <selection>	Select a device appropriate to
				your system
You should find the menu item HARDCOPY in the Top Panel. If you click on this item another set of menu items will appear in the Upper Panel. If you select DEVICE from this another menu will appear in the Presentation Area (this is called a Popup menu). In this case you should select a device on which you want your printed output to appear (there will be local documentation available to help you choose this). Always read the comments, they will tell you what to do and why you are doing it.

Some menus are too big to fit in its panel so some scrolling arrows may appear. Click on them to scroll up and down the list.
